How to Stop Gold-Plated Bangles From Tarnishing

The question I’m asked most often is how to stop gold-plated bangles tarnishing so they don’t turn dull or dark after a few wears. The good news: it’s almost entirely about habits, not expensive products. Here’s the routine I give everyone. (For the full buying picture, see the complete gold-plated bangles guide.)

The golden rule: bangles go on last

Perfume, hairspray, lotion and make-up are the biggest enemies of plating. Get fully ready first, then put your bangles on as the very last step. That one change makes a bigger difference than anything else.

Keep them dry

Water, soap, sweat and chlorine all speed up tarnishing. Take bangles off before washing your hands properly, doing dishes, exercising or swimming. If they do get wet, pat them dry straight away with a soft cloth.

Wipe after every wear

When you take them off, give each bangle a quick wipe with a soft, dry cotton cloth to remove oils and sweat before storing. No chemicals, no toothpaste, no harsh polishes — those can strip thin plating.

Store them airtight

  • Pop each bangle (or set) into its own small zip pouch to limit contact with air and moisture.
  • Add a silica-gel sachet to the box if you live somewhere humid.
  • Keep them separate so they don’t scratch each other.

What to avoid

Skip ultrasonic cleaners, abrasive cloths and any liquid “gold dip” on plated pieces — they’re made for solid gold and can take the plating with them. A thicker plating helps too, which is why pieces like our Antique Gold Temple Kada hold their colour longer.
